Fred McGaughan recently completed his 28th year serving in a variety of capacities at independent schools. He cut his teeth at the Peddie School, NJ from 1980-1985 as an English teacher and three season coach, and as a dorm master and Director of Student Activities. Upon departing Peddie, he was awarded the inaugural Parents Association Award for the faculty member who had the most influence on the lives of Peddie students.

From 1985-1991, Fred returned to his alma mater, The Taft School, where he served as Director of the Annual Fund, Editor of the alumni magazine, Media Liaison, English teacher, Head of the Jobs Service program, and athletic coach.

In 1991, it was back to New Jersey at Newark Academy in Livingston, where after one year of teaching, Fred began a 14-year run as Director of Admission followed by three years as Director of Institutional Advancement. During his tenure as Director of Admission, Newark Academy applications rose from 180 to 520. During his three years in Advancement, Newark Academy doubled its Annual Fund and raised over $12 million for endowment. Fred co-founded the NJAIS Admissions Steering Committee in 1994, and he was one of six admission directors from around the nation to plan and run the NAIS Admissions Training Workshops from 1994-2001.

After assisting with NAIS research for their marketing effort, "The Advocacy Initiative," in 2002-2003, he helped present findings and promote collaborative marketing to Independent School Regional Associations in North Carolina and Ohio. With Fred McGaughan Consulting, Fred is taking a two-pronged approach: 1. Assisting Independent Secondary Schools with Admissions and Marketing (individually and as part of the exciting new "National Coalition of Small Schools"). 2. Serving families in northern New Jersey with their "Search for the Right School."
